Finding your people: a local starting guide

A regular activity can make a new or changing neighbourhood feel more familiar. Start with something you already enjoy, then ask enough questions to find a group that fits.

Choose the interest before the organisation

Write down two things you would enjoy doing locally: reading, learning, sport, a creative activity or helping with a community project. Decide whether you want a one-off visit, a recurring session or a volunteer role. These involve different commitments.

Look beyond a single social feed

For sport, start with the venue and club information linked in our parks and sport guide. A field or clubhouse listing does not confirm registrations or a session suitable for beginners.

Ask before you commit

• Can I attend once before joining?
• Is the session suitable for a beginner or my age group?
• What are the full costs and equipment requirements?
• What time commitment is expected?
• Who should I speak with about access or support needs?

Confirm transport and the route into the venue if those affect whether you can attend. There is no need to disclose private medical or household information to a news publication to find an activity.

Help other neighbours discover it

If you organise a group, send a community update with a public contact, official link and confirmed participation details. Ask permission before supplying identifiable photographs or personal stories. A submission is reviewed rather than automatically published.
